The Vegan Bumble: Part 2

At this point in my dietary journey, things were going amazingly well. Living on a small island where seafood is abundant made my pescatarian lifestyle quite convenient. Even fast-food joints offered fish burgers, and social outings were free from awkward stares or probing questions. When cravings struck, I could easily indulge in fish fingers, conch fritters, conch snacks, and the ever-indulgent grouper finger dinners.

However, as I delved deeper into my online feeds, I stumbled upon vegan YouTubers who discussed common excuses for not going vegan, many of which resonated with me—especially the perceived lack of resources. These videos planted seeds of thought, nudging me toward documentaries they deemed "must-watches."

Documentaries That Shaped My Journey:

  • Forks Over Knives: Explores the health benefits of plant-based diets and their potential to prevent chronic diseases.

  • Blackfish: Highlights the ethical concerns surrounding marine animal captivity, particularly focusing on orcas in theme parks.

  • Cowspiracy: Investigates the environmental impact of animal agriculture and its contribution to deforestation, water consumption, and pollution.

  • What The Health: Examines the link between diet and disease, questioning the role of animal-based foods in health issues.

  • Earthlings: Provides a comprehensive look into human exploitation of animals across various industries, using hidden camera footage to reveal the suffering endured by animals.

  • The Game Changers: Showcases elite athletes and soldiers who thrive on plant-based diets, challenging the myth that meat is necessary for strength and performance.

Immersing myself in these eye-opening films, I emerged with a renewed perspective. I realized that all animals cherish life and none need to be sacrificed for our consumption. Embracing veganism with newfound zeal, I donned my metaphorical superhero cape, championing the cause of all creatures—well, except spiders.

Around this time, veganism was gaining momentum, with a surge of plant-based YouTubers sharing fun and easy recipes. For the first time, I truly relished my meals. I experimented with frying, baking, blending, and sautéing, making it an exciting culinary adventure.

But how did I bumble, you ask? Well, motherhood threw me a curveball. My kids turned out to be picky eaters, and crafting meals they enjoyed became a Herculean task. I also grappled with the notion of imposing my dietary choices on them, wanting them to explore and decide for themselves. This flexibility led to compromises—baked goods containing eggs, dairy yogurts for snacks (let's face it, vegan yogurt can be pricey when catering to a family), and the irresistible allure of cheese creeping back into our meals.

So, there it is—I stumbled. While I still can't bring myself to consume meat, I've allowed my children the freedom to make their own choices while mommy indulges along with them. To all the vegan moms who maintain their diets and find creative ways to nourish their picky eaters, I salute you!
